説明 | This portrait hangs in a small museum in the church. St Nectan's is the parish church of Hartland, although it's located nearly a mile to the west of the village. The Rev. William Chanter ministered there, first as assistant curate and later as holder the benefice, for more than 71 years. During the latter 53 years he was the 'perpetual curate' but, in those days, that meant that he was vicar in all but name. When he died aged 93 in 1859 he was still in office and had ministered the church for more than 71 of the 93 years of his life. His successor, Thomas How Chope, was in charge for 47 years during which time he became the first vicar. The next incumbent, Edgar Albert Luff was in office for a mere ten years from 1907 to 1917. But his successor, Ivon Lancelot Gregory, was the vicar from 1917 to 1953, although his ministry was interrupted by a stint of four years at St David's, Exeter. Assuming his curate was in charge at Hartland during those four years, that's four incumbents in 157 years. The 73-year ministry of William Chanter must surely be a record but to have only four incumbents in 157 years must also be a rarity. |
