説明 | NORFOLK -- Sabrina Tippins, Krista Sowers, Sheryl Reed, Vincent Cotton and Erika Field of the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, enjoy a free preview lunchtime cruise Aug. 25, aboard a Norfolk Tide light-rail train during its debut operation, which began Aug. 19. With more than 75,000 trips taken in its first full weekend of operation – for dining, shopping, work, fun and just being a part of history – due to popular demand, the Hampton Roads Transit extended the free rail operation through Aug. 29. The Tide ridership is expected to average about 2,900 on weekdays in its first year of operation. The Tide is the first light rail system in Virginia and marks the beginning of a new era for public transportation in Hampton Roads. The rail line extends 7.4 miles from the Eastern Virginia Medical Center complex east through downtown Norfolk, Va., adjacent to I-264 to Newtown Road. Eleven stations, with feeder bus routes, provide access to destinations to cultural, financial, educational and entertainment centers. (U.S. Army photo: Jerry Rogers) |
