| 説明 | In another era it would have been designated a "Castle" but when built this structure was very much a functional one, to house a garrison of Government troops in order to control the main south-north route into the Highlands.Built on a mound which formerly supported various castles through the centuries, this structure was built after the 1715 Jacobite Rebellion (1715). being completed in 1721.The day after the Battle of Culloden (16 April 1746) a force of some 3000 Jacobite Highlanders gathered at Ruthven, intent on fighting on until they received word that Bonnie Prince Charlie had directed them to seek to save themselves, and they dispersed into the hills, but not before taking Fort Ruthven and setting it on fire.
