説明 | The village of Yousaf Babar in Sindh, Pakistan, was devastated by last summer's flood. Khalid Ehmed's home was one of those washed away, and she and her family had been living in tents since then. But now they're living in a new, brick-built, flood-resistant home, funded by UK aid. Khalid Ehmed, who lost one of her seven sons in the flood, explains what happened to her family, and what a difference this has made:“When the flood came I went to a nearby village at 3am with all the children, there we lived for about three months, in an empty house of our relatives, but it had no roof, and no water. I had seven sons before the floods, but one son died in the flood. After three months we came back and got given a tent and blankets.” “But in January, Concern [one of the international charities that the UK has partnered with in Pakistan] contacted us and agreed to build a house for us. We moved in to this new house in May. We have good houses now; it’s cool in summer. A friend in need is a friend indeed. We are very thankful to people in the UK. We didn’t have clean water before, and we didn’t even dream about wash-rooms. We are very happy now."UK aid has helped build over 13,000 flood-resistant houses across Pakistan. Each home has one large room, big enough to house a family of up to eight. They are flood resistant, with raised cement foundations three feet high and built with bricks rather than the traditional mud and straw. In total, the UK has provided shelter to more than one million people since the floods hit Pakistan last summer; initially tents and emergency shelter, now building brick houses which will be more resilient against future floods. To find out more about how the UK is helping in Pakistan, please visit: www.dfid.gov.uk/Media-Room/Features/2011/Pakistan-floods-...Image credit: Vicki Francis/Department for International DevelopmentTerms of useThis image is posted under a Creative Commons - Attribution Licence, in accordance with the Open Government Licence.
