説明 | I noticed that some work was going on at the Edward VII statue. Looks like they are installing a new bronze piece on the left side of the plinth. The lorry there is from Kings Heavy Haulage (of Bristol). It was made by the sculptor Albert Toft. It was originally paid for by the readers of the Birmingham Mail after the King's death in 1910. It was unveiled in Victoria Square in 1913, before moving to Highgate Park in 1951.In the almost 60 years since it was there, it got heavily vandalised (in Highgate Park) and no one could see it.It was removed in 2009 for a full restoration, to be installed here in Centenary Square. The statue is Grade II listed. The following text from Heritage Gateway was when it was still in Highgate Park.1913 Albert Toft sculptor. Stone standing figure of the King in Field Marshal's uniform and Garter Robes set on high sandstone plinth with bronze groups of Education and Progress (including youth and boy with model of Tower Bridge) on the left side and Peace on the right, a female seated figure with attributes, good flowing drapery and sensitive faces. To the front face is a far more Act Nouvean composition in bronze of a crowned drapery niche containing a small figure of St George and the Dragon. This statue formerly stood in Victoria Square in front of the Council House.Statue of Edward VII - Heritage GatewayI wonder if English Heritage will have to modify the page (above link) now it's been moved / restored. |
