説明 | The representation begins with an Oriental in Persian dress, who is in the act of releasing an arrow. His metal bow has not survived. His hair, lips and eye contours were in red brown. His tiara was purple with a red flap at the back. His tunic and anaxyrides were purple and kandys dark blue. The sleeves of the latter were purple. His shoes were brown. In front of him a naked Greek rushes to the struggle. His ephaptis, or military wrap-around cloak used by the heavy infantry, is rolled around his left arm. The carving of his fingers indicates that he was armed with a metal lance in his left hand and a hunting axe in the other. Unfortunately the head has not survived.Alongside him a greyhound bounds towards the hunt. Its tail bears traces of yellow and on its collar and the ears and eyes brown has been distinguished. The next figure, of a Greek commander, gallops to assist the horseman in front of him. His head has indentations for attaching a royal diadem. Thus, although his physiognomy and dress do not differ from the other Greeks on the sarcophagus, he is thought to represent Alexander. He has discarded his armour for the hunt and was probably armed with a short metal hunting spear.Source: The Book of Alexander Sarcophagus by Alpay Pasinli |
