説明 | Merle Lang….A Waikerie GirlStory by Deb Morley & Sue Andrew, photo by Italo VardaroMerle came to Waikerie when she was two years old. The family bought the little shop next to the Uniting Church and they began a butcher’s shop there. “I remember Bill Carter used to do the slaughtering. He’d bring these sheep in and just hang them in the shop!” Merle’s dad delivered meat all aroundthe district. One day, when he was delivering meat to Lock Two,” a young lad hopped into Dad’s truck and it started to roll forward. He jumped out and it went over the cliff into the River Murray!” That was pretty well the end of the butcher business as they could not really continue without the truck.Merle was amongst the first students at Waikerie School to study in the Higher Primary Room which had just been built to take the students who wished to extend their studies. It was the only one in the district and students who lived a long way away had to live with a family in Waikerie during the week.Merle met her husband Reg at a dance in the nearby town of Ramco. “To get to a dance in Ramco there was this truck. It was all open at the back and we’d all pile on and go down to the dance. We didn’t care as long as we got there!”Merle, who is now in her 90’s, reckons she’s lived a very interesting life in her town…Waikerie.Excerpt from :”CONVERSATIONS…history comes as a story”.
