| 説明 | Vienna, Austria / Wien, ÖsterreichAn amazing thing to do in Austria is to find extremely old buildings that are still apartment buildings and just put your hands right on them for a while. Though updates are made and new door locks are added, something about putting your hand right on a door that beautiful Mozart touched is powerful. Progress and vitality are good things for culture. New construction and looking toward the future and letting go of traditions that no longer work are things we need to do to not become stagnant. But I think it's important to not think of history as stagnant. So many times on this trip, I would stare down a street and let my eyes glaze over the 20th and 21st century additions until they disappeared, picture what used to be there and no longer existed, and imagine the street life of that same street in the 1700s or 1800s. It's playing little mental games like this that help me bridge the gap between past and present, and make me see the life in music and writing and art that is hundreds of years old. |
