説明 | Details of Victoria Square House (the former General Post Office building in Victoria Square).Large door on Victoria Square House.This is the former General Post Office building in Victoria Square. It was formerly the headquarters of the Post Office for Birmingham. Later it was the head office of the TSB bank.It is a Grade II listed building.1889-91 by Sir Henry Tanner. Stone; slate roof. Three storeys plus attic;5 bays, the centre one slightly advanced and with superimposed orders,plus diagonal corner bays with pedimented entrances and also withsuperimposed orders. Ground floor with arched openings. First and secondfloors with cross windows. Exceedingly lively skyline with an arched windowwithin a pedimented attic flanked by steeply pitched roofs with dormer windowsand corner polygonal turrets with pediments, little domes and urns as finials.General Post Office - Heritage GatewayPevsner describe it as being in a simple French Renaissance style. It has pots and urns, which are really pediment and cupolas. And it has a dome on the left.It has three floors and two further attics, the building is decorated with Corinthian style pilasters and pillars, stone urns and above two of the attic windows, two lantern shaped domes. It has a round tower to it on the left. It might have been demolished in 1973, had it not been for the intervention of the Victorian Society |
