説明 | Seen in a neighborhood officially named Eureka Valley, but known to everyone as the Castro, the gayest neighborhood in America.Like most gay meccas, the Castro is overwhelmingly male. And that makes this memorial more poignant than ever. The AIDS epidemic was first noted by the medical establishment in 1981, and the first noted victims were gay men. In 2006, it was the 25th anniversary of the struggle against AIDS, and this makeshift memorial marks the somber anniversary. The Reagan Administration was quick to dismiss AIDS as a "gay disease," and slow to react. Only when AIDS continued to spread, and when it became the problem for everyone - intravenous drug users, blood donation recipients, and monogamous sex partners of infected persons - did serious solutions start to be sought. In the meantime, the dire situations presented by the AIDS epidemic helped gay men and lesbians, formerly antagonistic against each other, form alliances, as lesbian nurses did their best to give a bit of dignity to dying gay male AIDS patients. This also allowed the LGBT community to come together as a community, hold ground against Reagan-Bush homophobic assaults, and make significant gains when more friendly politicians were in power. |
