説明 | The fire gutted the former Strain Hall at 18 Park Terrace on the 13 June 2006, spreading through into nos 19-21. The former townhouses were being converted into flats at the time after having been sold by the University of Glasgow who had previously owned Nos 15-21.For some reason, many references to this shell of a once fine Charles Wilson-designed residence state this is No 17 - that's the mirroring building on the other side of Park Gate which was the original Maclay Hall, gifted to the University in 1921. No 18, Strain Hall, was donated in 1936; No 16 was acquired at somepoint between 1927 and 1943; No 19, Fergusson Hall was donated along with Nos 15 & 20 in 1957. No 21, Barclay Hall was donated in 1975. All of Nos 15-21 eventually became singularly known as Maclay Hall hence, perhaps, some of the confusion.Regardless, the question is why, after all the other former university halls have been occupied, this one, No 18, continues to lie empty? It's a somewhat unsightly and prominent blemish on Wilson's "Woodland's Hill Crown"... |
