説明Château de Castelnau-Bretenoux is a striking medieval fortress perched atop a rocky plateau in the commune of Prudhomat in the Lot department of France. This castle, commanding sweeping views of the surrounding countryside, stands as one of the most impressive landmarks in the Quercy region and has been officially designated a monument historique since 1862 .The castle’s history dates back to around 1100 when Hugues, the baron of Castelnau, began fortifying his manor. Over the subsequent centuries—from the 12th through the 15th—successive generations expanded and adapted the castle to the changing demands of warfare, enhancing its defensive walls and towers as military technology evolved (for instance, to counter new artillery). During the turbulent medieval period, it even fell into English hands under King Henry II, though it was later returned to the Castelnau family after the Hundred Years’ War. In the 17th century, the castle’s role shifted from pure military fortress to a more refined residence, incorporating elegant features like large windows, decorated salons, and a balcony of honor that highlighted contemporary aesthetic tastes .After the last of the Castelnau heirs died in the early 18th century, the castle slowly fell into disrepair—even surviving a dramatic fire in 1851 that damaged its great gallery and courtyard buildings. The turning point came at the end of the 19th century when Jean Moulierat, an opera singer with a passion for history and art, purchased the castle. Over a span of thirty years, he meticulously restored it by reinforcing its medieval character with Gothic revival touches. Moulierat’s dedication culminated in the castle’s bequest to the French state in 1932, ensuring its preservation as a national monument .
