説明 | This 4 cents proprietary revenue stamp was issued by America in 1862. It is a "First Issue", Scott Catalogue # R22c, a perforated variety. Revenue stamps (= tax stamps) were issued in the 1860s to help the Union pay for the American Civil War ("War Between the States"). Because purchasers of revenue stamps were required to sign and date the stamps when used, most revenue stamp cancellations are manuscript. However, this example has a handstamp cancel dated February 19, 1869. First Issue revenue stamps depict President George Washington. The design is based on a famous painting of Washington by Gilbert Stuart. |
