説明 | The hippodrome (an elongated U-shaped stadium for chariot races) at Perge could accommodate 12,000 spectators. It is one of the largest and best-preserved stadiums of antiquity. The architectural style and stonework date it to the 2nd century CE. In the mid-3rd century CE the wall was added blocking off the curved end to create an arena for gladiatorial and animal combat.Signs of inhabitance at Perge date back to at least the Early Bronze Age (c. 30th century BCE). It was part of the Hittite Empire (c. 1650-c. 1180 BCE). In the 7th century BCE Perge probably became a Greek colony of Rhodes. The Greek Alexander the Great replaced Persian rule in 334 BCE. The ancient Greek geometer and astronomer Apollonius of Perga (c. 240–c. 190 BCE) is known for his work on conic sections: the circle plus the ellipse, parabola, and hyperbola which he defined. Perge was prosperous enough in the 2nd century BCE to mint its own coins depicting Artemis and her temple. In 133 BCE the Roman Republic (precursor to the Roman Empire) inherited the Pergamon Kingdom which included Perge. In 46 CE the Apostle Paul passed through Perge (Acts 13:13-14) before returning later to preach (Acts 14:25). Roman Emperor Vespasian (r. 69-79 CE) granted the city the prestigious rank of neokorate which allowed the building of an imperial cult temple dedicated to him. The 2nd century CE saw an economic boom; Perge expanded and monuments were built. Although the city lost its secular importance as the nearby Cestrus (Aksu) River silted up, it remained a significant center of Christianity which became the official religion of the Roman Empire in 380 CE. Perge was inhabited until the rise of the Sunni Muslim Seljuk Empire in the 11th century CE.On Google Earth:Hippodrome 36°57'34.62"N, 30°51'6.92"E |
