説明A 2nd century CE frieze panel from the Theater at Hierapolis depicts the Coronation of Hierapolis. She is in the middle receiving the crown from Tykhe, the city’s protector, on the right. On the left, Demos stands before the altar offering the public’s reward and sacrifice. Watching the event from the bottom right corner is Gaia (Earth)The museum of Hierapolis is housed in the Central Baths complex built in the 2nd century CE that used water from hot springs welling up in the middle of the city. A gymnasium with four rooms around a central courtyard augmented the bathing facilities.Greeks settled in the area that would become Hierapolis in the late 3rd century BCE, but it was not until around 190 BCE that Eumenes II, King of Pergamon (r. 197-159 BCE), granted it ‘polis’ (city-state) status. Early bronze coins identified the ‘polis’ as ‘Hiero’ (for unclear reasons) which eventually changed to Hierapolis (“holy city”) allegedly due to the large number of temples. Thermal springs made the city a healing center.Hierapolis became associated with Rome in 133 BCE. The city was destroyed by an earthquake in 17 CE and again in 60 CE after which it was rebuilt with imperial financial support into its present Roman style. By the 3rd century CE it was a wealthy city of 100,000 inhabitants. In the 4th century CE Hierapolis became an important center for Christianity with the Temple of Hades filled in with stones and the baths converted into a basilica. Persian armies and then an earthquake devasted Hierapolis in the 7th century CE prompting an exodus of residents. The Seljuk sultanate took control in the 12th century CE until crusaders came along. The Seljuks later returned but the city was ultimately totally abandoned in the late 14th century CE.Hierapolis-Pamukkale was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988.On Google Earth:Central Baths 37°55'29.86"N, 29° 7'26.64"E
