| 説明 | This photo of Australian artist Norman Lindsay in Springwood in the Blue Mountains was taken in 1921 by Harold Cazneaux. Prints of this image are held in a number of collections but in this case we are looking at an original glass negative. The negative's surface exhibits a number of marks caused by wear and tear over time, most notably the scratch across Lindsay's left arm. But there some interesting details in this high resolution scan which are very hard to pick up on the prints. Cazneaux often deliberately marked his negatives to add details or emphasise parts of the photo. And he did this more than most photographers whose collections I have looked at. These marks, which often disappear in printing a positive, can look unfinished on the surface of the glass negative.In the detail you can see his work around the neck and ear used to differentiate the figure from the background. But you can also see where Cazneaux has scratched the plate - along the nose, above the eyebrow, in the corner of the mouth and on the chin.
