説明Built in 1930-1934, this Collegiate Gothic Revival-style building was designed by John C. Christensen to serve as Lane Technical High School. The school, founded in 1908, was originally located in the vicinity of William Seward Park on the Near North Side at the northeast corner of Sedgwick Street and Division Street, but had outgrown this building by the 1920s, with enrollment projected to increase further. As a result, the school was moved to its present site along Addison Street at Western Avenue, which afforded a far larger site for a massive building, though it was far less forward-looking in its aesthetics than its predecessor, which was a Prairie-style building. After Lane Tech moved out, the previous building was converted into the Washburne Vocational High School, which itself moved in 1958, and the building was converted into Cooley High School, which served the Cabrini-Green Homes, and remained in operation until 1979, and was demolished in 1981. The site of the original Lane Technical High School today is home to a set of townhouses and apartments built in the early 21st Century as part of the redevelopment of the Cabrini-Green area. The current Lane Technical High School is situated on a massive campus that borders the North Branch of the Chicago River, with tree-lined greens, large athletic fields, a large stadium, and borders the former site of Riverview Park, an amusement park which once sat immediately to the south of the school campus. The sprawling Lane Technical High School building is characterized by its red brick exterior with terra cotta trim, gothic arched bays, crenellated parapets, octagonal towers, buttresses, multiple entrance towers, gabled bonnet roofs, a large smokestack at the building’s south wing, and a central courtyard. The building today remains in use as a public high school, today known as Lane Tech College Prep High School.
