| 説明 | Built in 1908-1910, this Prairie-style building was designed by Dwight H. Perkins to serve as a public high school for the rapidly growing Irving Park neighborhood in northwest Chicago, and was named for Carl Schurz, a statesman, soldier, and pro-democratic activist in Germany and the United States. The building was expanded with an addition in 1915, designed by Arthur F. Hussander, and another addition in 1923-1924, designed by John C. Christensen, which expanded the building to include a larger auditorium, additional gymnasiums, a V-shaped rear wing that borders Waveland avenue and obscures the original north facade within a courtyard, and two wings flanking the original building, and partially enclosing the building’s front lawn, altering its character to be more like that of a courtyard. The building is the largest Prairie-style building in the world, and was designed such that it is reminiscent of Prairie-style houses, but on a larger scale. The building is clad in buff brick and brown brick with a hipped red terra cotta tile roof featuring tapered eaves at the gable ends, double-hung windows, terra cotta trim, a large auditorium wing at the northwest corner of the building, projected secondary entrance bays, and copper gutters. Inside, the building features staircases with metal railings, terrazzo floors in the hallways, wooden doors, a massive auditorium with a vaulted ceiling and second-story balcony, a decorative trim surround at the proscenium, and wooden seats, a library that was the building’s original auditorium, which features decorative murals by Gustave Brand, a domed ceiling, half-dome niches, and green and brown tile at the base of the walls, and arched clerestory windows, a vaulted ceiling in the lobby with a mural featuring a map of the world, and multiple gymnasiums, some of which feature second-story running tracks. The building was designated a Chicago Landmark in 1979, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011. Today, the building remains in use as a high school operated by Chicago Public Schools. |
