説明Built in 1986, this Brutalist building was designed by Bertrand Goldberg to serve as a mixed-use building with 449 apartments, office space, a marina, and retail space. The building is clad in concrete, with the tower portion being S-shaped, with the tower’s southern portion curving westwards towards the South Branch of the Chicago River, while curving eastwards to the north, allowing space for a small harbor that contains the building’s marina. The building’s facade, like many of Goldberg’s projects, is reminiscent of a grain silo, with multiple curved segments that each have arched or roughly trapezoidal window bays, with taller portions of the tower being up to 14 stories tall, while shorter portions are 9 stories in height. At the base, the building’s facade pulls inwards to allow for multiple terraces, with the upper portions of the facade resting atop flared concrete columns. Inside, the building features multiple types of apartment units flanking a 10-story atrium, known as River Road, which sits beneath a long skylight, and features textured concrete walls, curved elevator and stair towers, and is flanked on most levels by balconies, with several walkways spanning the atrium to connect both sides of each floor together. To the east of the building is a three-story podium, which contains commercial space and a parking garage, and features a rusticated stone facade with roman arched openings along Wells Street, and a rooftop garden. The building was intended to be the first phase of a multi-phase project that would have extended the building with additional, nearly identical segments to the north towards Harrison Street and to the south towards Roosevelt Road, but these planned phases never happened as the developer struggled to obtain financing. Today, the building is flanked by more modern high-rise residential towers, while the land to the south remains vacant.
