説明 | Built in 1930-1931, this Art Deco and Arts and Crafts-style building was designed by Eliel Saarinen to house the Kingswood School for Girls, a private school affiliated with the Cranbrook Academy. The building is clad in buff brick with a hipped standing seam metal roof, wide overhanging eaves, metal-frame windows in large bays, tiered chimney stacks that taper towards their pinnacles, brick screens and decorative patterned brickwork, tiered and tapered stone columns at the building’s porticoes with decorative geometric motifs, decorative art glass windows at the exterior of building’s major common spaces, dormitory wings at the east and south ends of the long, rambling structure, an entrance courtyard accessed through a breezeway with flared multi-tier columns, and a beautifully detailed interior that is not open to the general public. The building is a contributing structure in the Cranbrook Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1989. Today, the building serves as the Kingswood Campus of the Cranbrook Upper School, a coeducational private high school. |
