| 説明 | 88F249 - Towboat "Matt S" moving asphalt barge after a spill at the Ashland Asphalt Terminal, just upriver from the Kennedy BridgeBlack asphalt can be seen on part of the reddish superstructure and rusty side of the barge. The hull was not damaged, so the barge is being temporarily moved to the Ashland gasoline terminal across the river in Clarksville, Indiana."Matt S" (doc. # 907034)Twin screw towboat, built in 1987 by Marine Builders, Inc., Utica, Indiana52 feet x 22 feet Cummins KTA855-M diesels, 700 hp. Twin Disc reduction gears 5.16:1Originally named "Matt S"Operated by Marine Transportation Co., UticaSold in 1992 and renamed "Capt. Jeff" by St. Jude & New Madrid Marine Service, Inc., Portageville, MissouriThe "Matt S" did harbor work in the Louisville area for many years.A note on the engines in this boat: The KTA stands for K-series, Turbocharged, Aftercooled (aka intercooled). The 855 refers to 855 cubic inches displacement and the M refers to a marine application. If you're interested, there is a YouTube video showing how to overhaul a Cummins KTA engine (Part 1 and Part 2). The soundtracks start about 20 seconds (Part 1) and 40 seconds (Part 2) into the videos. There is also a rebuild of a Cummins 6BT engine, which is not a marine engine. (The video is sped up to save time, making the voices in the background sound like the Chipmunks.)Louisville, KentuckyOhio River mile 603June 1988Scanned from a 35 mm Kodachrome slide. |
