説明 | Built in 1890-1891, this Richardsonian Romanesque Revival-style building was designed by Spier and Rohn for the Students' Christian Association of the University of Michigan, and was named in memory of John H. Newberry, whose widow, Helen H. Newberry, funded the construction of the building. The building became home to the Young Women’s Christian Association of the University of Michigan in 1904, and in 1921, was leased to the university to serve as a classroom building, and in 1928, became home to a museum operated by the Department of Classical Studies. In 1937, the University of Michigan purchased the building, and in 1953, the museum within the building became an independent entity, known as the Francis W. Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. The building is clad in rough-hewn stone with a hipped roof, a front gable, a cylindrical corner tower with a conical roof, one-over-one windows, a one-story corner bay window, a recessed front porch with arched openings, and a rectilinear rear addition. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, and is a contributing structure in the University of Michigan Central Campus Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. |
