説明Built in 1787-1791 by Jonathan Bryant and John Nichols, and renovated in the 1860s, 1883, 1885, and 1891, this lighthouse and distinctive Queen Anne-style keeper’s cottage comprise the Portland Head Light, located at the headland of Cape Elizabeth, on the south end of the entrance to Portland Harbor. The tower stands 80 feet (24 meters) tall, and stands 21 feet (7 meters) above sea level. The tapered base of the tower is the oldest part of the complex, and was built of rubble stone, which has been whitewashed, with a brick masonry addition and metal and glass lantern atop the tower, added in the late 19th Century. Around the tower are a series of brick and wood-frame buildings, including an attached keeper’s cottage, which is clad in wooden clapboard and wooden shingles, with a side-gable roof, double-hung windows, and a front porch with arched openings. The lighthouse complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The lighthouse was automated in 1989, and today, is one of the most iconic landmarks along the coast of Maine, and is situated in a public park on the former site of Fort Williams, which served as a US Army installation from 1898 until 1962.
