説明 | Looking west down the nave to the tower arch The previous church was rebuilt in the Norman period, then enlarged in the 14c, with a west tower added / rebuilt in the 15c. A north aisle was added in 1628 at the expense of Humphrey Hutchins 1628 www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/53y443SP45 after he is said to have discovered a "miraculous treasure" whilst ploughing a field still known as Money Acre . The entire church was rebuilt in 1877. However the oldest surviving part of the church is the 12c arcade with its huge early Norman piers with scalloped capitals. You can see where the original Norman pillars were cut away by masons in the 13c when the rounded arcade arches were replaced by pointed Gothic arches. To the right can be seen the 17c Prideaux monument past their north chapel dedicated by Louisa widow of Sir Edmund Saunderson Prideaux before her death in 1878 Picture with thanks - copyright Rex Harris - flic.kr/p/anP5YG |
