ShookRemark: Constructed in 1909, three years after the founding of Gary, the 133-foot tall tower containing a 290,000 gallon tank was listed as "endangered" by Indiana Landmarks but was demolished in 2020 by the Indiana-American Water Company.The water tower structure was designed by John W. Alvord of Chicago. The tower was 30 feet in diameter and sat on eight 90-foot steel columns. The Gary Heat, Light, and Water company wrapped the tank in a octagonal concrete block shell with a decorative cornice and parapet wall. It was the gem of Gary's Jefferson Park.The following newspaper item was published in the August 25, 1912, issue of the The Tampa Morning Tribune:FLEA HALTS ENGAGEMENTGirl Shies From Picture Enlarged on Post CardGARY, Ind., Aug. 24. -- A romance which was almost shattered by the picture of a Gary sand flea on a postal card came to a happy ending in Chicago when John Meeker of Gary, was married to Miss Josephine Kudly of Chicago.The breach came during their courtship a year ago when Meeker sent his wife-to-be a love missile on a postal card on which was a picture of a Gary sand flea magnified many times. Miss Kudly broke off the engagement at once, declaring that she would rather live in Africa than in Gary where such insects live.
