説明 | The Dil Pickle Club (sometimes "Dill Pickle Club") was a Bohemian club and speakeasy from 1917 to around 1933 or 1935. It was founded by John "Jack" Jones, a Wobbly union member during the Chicago Renaissance as a speakers club for fellow IWW (Industrial Workers of the World) members. It grew to become a soapbox and lounge for various radicals in the feminist, socialist, and homosexual realms as well as performances of jazz, dance and one-act plays. By the 1930s it because more of a mob hangout. Tax problems put the final nail in the coffin of the club and it was sold. It was torn down in 1972.Physically, the club was an old barnhouse that sat at the northern end of the block defined by Delaware, Dearborn, State & chestnut streets. The entrance was in the alley, called Tooker Alley. You entered the alley through a right-left entrance on State or from the opposite street on Dearborn. This is the view from the Dearborn end of Tooker Alley. The Dil entrance would have been on the left.Located in Tooker Place, at 859 N. Dearborn or 850 N. State. |
