説明 | 88F228 - Excursion boats "Bonnie Belle" and "River Queen" upbound near foot of Spring Street, Jeffersonville, Indiana, Ohio River mile 603June 1988The sternwheel excursion boat "Bonnie Belle" (doc. # 521612, length 105 feet, breadth 21 feet, Caterpillar diesel, 240 hp., passenger capacity about 150) was built in 1969 by Dubuque (Iowa) Boat and Boiler Co. The 14-foot diameter paddlewheel rotates at a maximum 19 rpm resulting a top speed of about 9 mph.Originally named "Border Star", the boat was owned by Kansas City Missouri River Navigation Co.In 1970, the boat was sold to Arkansas River Charter, Little Rock, Arkansas.In 1975, the boat was sold to Sangamon Packet Co., Petersburg, Illinois.In 1978, the boat was sold to Lloyd G. Poore of Madison, Indiana, and renamed "Bonnie Belle" after his wife Bonnie and his mother Belle.In 1993, the boat was sold to Losantiville Cruise Lines, located in or near Cincinnati, Ohio.After that, the boat changed owners and names several times: "Northern Star"; "Arawanna Belle" at Toledo, Ohio; "Cocoa Belle" in Cocoa Beach, Florida; and starting in 2004, "Magnolia Belle" out of Madisonville, Louisiana, on Lake Pontchartrain.In 2017, it was reported that the boat was laid up but that its owner, Grand Majestic Riverboat Co., intended to operate it for cruises on the Ohio River in the Cincinnati area.Current (2025) whereabouts unknown.The propeller excursion boat "River Queen" (documentation # 699243, 130 feet long, 35 feet wide) was built in 1982 by Serodino, Inc., at Guild, Tennessee, and is powered by two Cummins NT855-M diesels< producing 580 horsepower.Note the decorative faux sidewheels.The first owner, Riverboats, Inc. (apparently owned by Capt. Robert Lumpp), of Chattanooga, Tenn., operated the boat on the Tennessee River at Knoxville until 1988, when it was moved to a dock just upstream from the Clark Bridge, Jeffersonville, Indiana, where it was operated by Falls Cities Riverboat Co.In 1991, it was sold to Star of Knoxville, Inc., and renamed "Star of Knoxville". As of early 2025, the boat has been renamed "Spirit of the Low Country" and offers chartered cruises in the waters around Charleston, South Carolina. |
