| 説明 | Built in 1892, this Shingle-style house was designed by Wilson Eyre for Charles Lang Freer, co-founder of the Peninsular Car Company. The house features a first floor and base clad in rough-hewn stone with wooden shingle cladding on the second floor, gable ends, and dormers, double-hung windows, decorative glass transoms, an attached rear carriage house with a large arch on the first floor of the connecting wing, and one-story wings to the east and west of the central wing of the house. The house was designed to accommodate the large art collection of Charles Lang Freer, with the house being expanded in 1904-1906 to add another art gallery and a new section of the structure to contain the historic James Whistler-designed Peacock Room, originally created for a townhouse in Kensington, London. Following the death of Freer in 1919, the art collection and Peacock Room were donated to The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, where they remain on display today. The house became home to the Merrill Palmer Institute in 1923. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, and is a contributing structure in the East Ferry Avenue Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. |
