説明 | Hermits Cave Lookout. We have a brief stop here at the lookout and unfortunately we do to have time to do the almost 1km walk and climb up and down the rocky steps. An open cave beneath some overhanging rocks became the home of a local Italian hermit named Valerio Ricetti. He was one of the first Puglia Italian migrants to Port Pirie around 1914. He then moved to Broken Hill mines and finally to Griffith in 1929. He had had troubles with police and society and lived in the rocks until 1942 when he was interned as an Italian Prisoner of War. In 1943 he moved to an Italian property as a labourer but still visited his former rocky home. He returned to Italy in 1952 and died there shortly afterwards. The closest feature to the lookout is the “chapel” a hole in some rocks down two rocky uneven steep flights of steps. |
