(24.8 x 957.4 cm)The subject and imagery of this painting are derived from a composition attributed to the Tang dynasty (618–907) artist Liang Lingzan that is now in the collection of the Osaka Municipal Museum of Art. The painting depicts the deities of the Five Planets, which correspond to the five primary elements—wood (Jupiter), fire (Mars), earth (Saturn), metal (Venus), and water (Mercury)—and the twenty-eight constellations of the Chinese zodiac.Qiu Ying, a fine artist in his own right, was also famous as a skilled copyist of earlier paintings. Such copies were highly valued by collectors and other artists who might not have access to the originals. This painting bears the signature and seals of Qiu Ying but may itself be a later copy. 此《五星二十八宿神形图》卷传为明代仇英所绘。画卷描绘：五星（岁星、太白星、镇星、荧惑星、辰星）、二十八宿（角星、亢星、氐星、房星、心星、尾星、箕星、斗星、牛星、女星、虚星、危星、营室星、璧星、奎星、娄星、胃星、昴星、毕星、觜星、参星、井星、鬼星、柳星、星宿、张星、翼星、轸星）及五岳真形图（东岳泰山、南岳衡山、中岳嵩山、北岳恒山、西岳华山）。“五星二十八宿” 中的 “五星” ， 亦可称五纬， 即中国古代天文学中的金、 木、 水、 火、 土五大行星。 其中， 金星古称明星， 又名太白金星；木星， 古称岁星； 水星， 古称辰星； 火星， 因其时明时暗， 行踪不定， 古称荧惑星； 土星， 古称镇星、 填星、 信星等。 “二十八宿” ， 源于道教文化。二十八宿， 其中东方青龙七宿是角、 亢、 氐、 房、心、 尾、 箕； 北方玄武七宿是斗、 牛、 女、 虚、 危、室、 壁； 西方白虎七宿是奎、 娄、 胃、 昴、 毕、 觜、参； 南方朱雀七宿是井、 鬼、 柳、 星、 张、 翼、 轸。仇英（约 1498-1552）字实父，号十洲，原籍江苏太仓，后移居苏州。 中国明代绘画大师，吴门四家之一。尤其擅画人物，尤长仕女，既工设色，又善水墨、白描，能运用多种笔法表现不同对象，或圆转流美，或劲丽艳爽。偶作花鸟，亦明丽有致。与沈周、文徵明、唐寅并称为 “明四家” |
