説明 | Built in 1886, this Shingle-style building was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and Joseph Lyman Silsbee for the Lloyd-Jones family, whom were Unitarian, and were the extended family of Frank Lloyd Wright. The building was the first commission by Wright, and demonstrates his early Shingle style and Arts and Crafts influences, which later inspired his evolution towards the Prairie School at the turn of the 20th Century. The building is clad in wooden shingles with a rough-hewn stone base, a hipped roof, a belfry at the intersection of the various sections of the roof, simple double-hung windows, a front entrance porch with a shingle-clad column, and a simple interior featuring a wooden ceiling, wooden wainscoting, wooden flooring, and plastered walls. Around the building is a cemetery, which contains graves of many members of the extended Lloyd-Jones family, as well as the grave of Frank Lloyd Wright, where he was buried from his death in 1959 until the death of his late wife, Olgivanna Lloyd Wright, in 1985, whereupon Wright’s body, according to the wishes of Olgivanna, was controversially exhumed and moved to Taliesin West in Phoenix, Arizona. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The building today serves as a small chapel, which hosts special events and weddings. |
