説明 | Griffith. Population 20,500. Anglican Cathedral City. Walter Burley Griffin designed the layout of Griffith for the NSW government in 1914. Like his plan for Canberra the town plan followed the contours, had several circular roads or circi, had a broad central avenue with widecentral strip, had lots of curving roads, diagonal axes and hexagonal roads around the main circular street and avoided rectangular housing blocks. The government saw Griffith as the main town of the MIA and it wasproclaimed in 1916. Like Leeton the early workers were accommodated in tents and timber framed structures. They soon gave way to fine brick and stone buildings. The main water canal from the Murrumbidgee extends from Narrandera through the town of Griffith and just beyond it. This is the water that bought the district aliveand turned it into the food bowl of Australia but with the addition of vegetables, nuts cotton and rice these days. The canal follows most of the central circus of Griffith and then veers north west. It is hard to imagine how water flows from the Blowering Dam at Talbingo to Griffith and beyond. From its early years Griffith has some Italianimmigrants living and working there but most of the Italian residents came to Griffith after World War Two. By the 1960s Griffith was seen as the centre of organised Mafia style crime and the marijuana trade. The town made national headlines in 1977 when anti-drug campaigner Donald Mackay disappeared from a hotel carpark and his body was never found. Hitman James Bazley was convicted of his murder in 1986. The main suspects all had good alibis including drinking with local policemen so it was a contract killing. A NSW Royal Commission named the six suspects but could press no charges. Federal Labor politician Al Grassby was implicated in the cover-up when he tried to argue that Mackay’s wife had him murdered. After a 12 year legal battle when Grassby was acquitted he had to apologise to Mackay’s wife. Al Grassby was the member for Griffith before Mackay’s murder. There is a small marble bust of Mackay in the median strip of Banna Avenue unveiled in 2008. The town has been serviced by a railway since 1916 and has two XPT train services a week from Sydney via Cootamundra and Junee. The railway from Temora reached here in 1916. The railway station was built shortly after that. The current XPT train follows a longer route through Junee and Narrandera to the terminus in Griffith. Despite nearly 40% of the population identifying themselves as Catholics, Griffith is the Cathedral city of the Anglican Diocese of the Riverina. A decision was made in the late 1930s to build a cathedral in Griffith but work did not physically being on the project until May 1954.The Griffith Church was consecrated in 1955. The Diocese was created in 1884 with the Bishop based in Hay at the pro Cathedral. Griffith Church did not officially become the Cathedral until 1984 when the Diocese celebrated its centenary. The parishes of the Cathedral stretch from Broken Hill to Hay, Deniliquin and Coolamon. Griffith is now a multi faith city and it also has a large Sikh temple and the Riaz Mosque. Early immigrants to Griffith came from Italy but in recent decades they have come from Samoa, India, Fiji, Tonga, Taiwan, Afghanistan, Pakistan etc. |
