Altitude 450 to 490 metres.The Reedy Creek district where Batlow now stands was surveyed by a Mr Batlow but one of the early pastorals stations here was called Batlow by Mr T Mara so it as probably named after this run which was taken out in 1854. A small goldfield was discovered at Batlow in 1854 and Mr Batlow the surveyor then laid out the town plan. When the miners left any town growth stalled. Early settlers called the settlement Reedy Creek but Batlow was adopted by the government for the first school herein 1872. The first Post Office, another indicator of town growth opened in 1873 and a sawmill began operations in 1880. The town of Batlow was not formally proclaimed until 1910. Once the NSW Robertson Act of 1861 allowed selectors to occupy leased or government land for farming. Those wanting to farm with limit means could select land almost wherever they liked without survey. One of the first selectors to take up land from the pastoralists in Batlow was Richard Quarmby in 1869. Before the opening of the government school in a slab hut in 1872 the children from the district attended Adelong School. A new school building was erected in 1882 and in 1897 a teacher at that school started the orchard industry when he panted 800 fruit trees on his property. He gave up teaching at this stage! Fruit trees were planted from the early years but this teacher started planted his orchards as a commercial proposition. In 1923 the first cool store was built and the Batlow Packing House and Cool Stores Rural Co-operative Limited was founded. This was no doubt prompted by the building of a spur railway from Tumut to Batlow in the same year. Most of the first orchards were apple orchards and in the 1930s Batlow began procuring cider and the first Apple Blossom Festival began in 1942. After World War Two the town continued to prosper with soft wood plantations for saw milling and the fruit canning industry. During the War Batlow had provided dehydrated fruit and vegetables for US and Australian soldiers and women from the Land Army worked in the orchards and cannery of the district. In 1967 the Co-op was renamed Mountain Maid Foods Co-op and the cans of pie apple and other preserved fruits, especially peaches and pears and cherries started to appear in the newly established supermarkets around Australia. Batlow is still the main apple growing district of NSW although the cannery closed about 20 years ago. In the local park is a giant Mountain Maid apple tin. Nearby is a wall mural about the Womens’ Land Army as they were crucial to the survival of the fruit industry in Batlow during World War Two. Also look for the world’s biggest Apple Peeler next to the Institute in Wirrilla Park. It is an example of chainsaw sculpture. There are also four sculptures in the Main Street which are part of the Snowy Valleys Sculpture Trail. In the Main Street which is Pioneer Street you can see a few old buildings including the pretty St Johns Anglican Church (1933) , the Big Apple Peeler, the Art Deco style Institute built in 1933 and the derelict Batlow Packing house built in 1944 down the side street. The street to the right up the hill from the Institute is Selwyn Street which has the old wooden Catholic Church (1928) and the more modern church. The first Catholic Church was built in Batlow in 1875. Also in Selwyn St is the fine red brick, Methodist Church (1931) which is now a Uniting Church. Across the road from that is another brick Church, the former Congregational Church (1933) which is now the Batlow Museum. The top street, Tumbarumba Road has the bakery and the IGA supermarket and Post Office. |
