説明 | An Instagram moment. The Meisho Maru shipwreck - or what little is left of it - is a notable landmark along South Africa’s southernmost coastline at the Tip of Africa. This Japanese fishing vessel, which ran aground in the 1980s, is a popular site for travelers and photographers, especially at sunset where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet.On 16 November 1982, the Meisho Maru No. 38 ran aground near Cape Agulhas. Despite the early hour and challenging conditions, all 17 crew members survived by swimming to shore. The wreck is located about 1.5 kilometers from the Cape Agulhas Lighthouse and the 'Tip of Africa' monument.Cape Agulhas has a long history of shipwrecks due to its treacherous seas. The Meisho Maru is one of approximately 140 ships that have met their end at this location. Over time, the wreck has deteriorated, with only the bow section now visible above the waves. The Meisho Maru shipwreck continues to erode, with its rusted bow sinking lower each year. It serves as a reminder of the many ships that have been lost along South Africa’s coastlines, which have seen more than 2500 shipwrecks since the early 1500s. |
