説明 | A selection of the remaining WW1 (1916) era pillboxes in Norfolk. Constructed at a time when there was doubt in the strength of the Royal Navy to defend the mainland from a German attack, and when Zeppelins were dropping bombs on British towns and cities. The term 'pillbox' was not widely adopted until 1917, so these structures would likley have been known as blockhouses, and would not have sat in isolation; being support (as most during WW2 did) with trenches and machine gun positions. These defences appear to be constructed from precast and curved concrete blocks, with larger bespoke blocks around the loopholes and above the door. The roof slab appears to have bene cast in situ. |
