説明Cohuna. Population 1,800. Mitchell’s last camp on the Murray River near here 26th June 1836. Cohuna is situated on Gunbower Creek with a series of swamps and islands between the town and the Murray River which is about 8 kms northwards. The majority of pastoral runs in this area were licensed in 1845. Many employed Aboriginal labourers as the main part of their workforces in the early years as white labourers were searching for gold. Aboriginal men were employed as shearers, wood cutters, shepherds, water carters and the women hired as needleworkers and bark cutters. Gunbower run estabsliehd in 1845 occupied most of the well-watered Gunbower Island which is 50 kms long and the largest inland island in Australia. Most of the island is now Gunbower National Park is noted for its trees, bird life (160 species), native mammals and reptiles and estuarine life but earlier it was home to many Aboriginal people and the provider of enormous numbers of red gum railway sleepers which were used across Victoria. Saw milling was a major industry on the island since the 1870s. In 1874 farmers could select small areas for farming from the pastoral leases in Victoria and farmers moved into the district. In 1875 Cohuna town was laid out. Cohuna is based on an Aboriginal word meaning brolga or companion. Irrigation of small farms began with some private irrigation works then in 1882 a government water pumping scheme was established here. In 1886 the Cohuna Irrigation Trust was founded and agriculture expanded, especially dairying, with the Cohuna butter factory opening in 1906. Further expansion occurred in 1911 when a newspaper reported that: - most were involved in the growing of lucerne and dairying with a view to fruit cultivation and most were Englishmen with English wives and fresh-faced healthy children. The town water tank was built before 1912. Irrigation expanded yet again in 1933 when the Torrumbarry Weir was built across the Murray River. It no longer exists. When established Cohuna developed solidly and slowly. By 1884 Cohuna had three churches, a hotel, Post Office, a school, a cemetery, a blacksmith and a cobbler. A railway line from Elmore did not reach the town until 1915. A Catholic church was built in 1904 to the design of a Kerang architect. It was altered and enlarged in 1953. The War Memorial Hall opened in 1922 after World War One. The current Post Office was built in 1927. The high school opened in 1955 and the town museum is located in the old Presbyterian Church built in 1912 in Sampson St. directly behind the Post Office in King Edwards Street. Also along King Edward St is the Anglican Church which opened in 1909 and the Masonic Temple built in 1916 with the interior modelled on King Solomon’s temple. It has a Latin inscription audi, vide, tace which means –hear, see, be silent. South of the town is Mt Hope where Major Mitchell in 1836 hoped to see the sea. Also about 10 kms south of the town is Kow Swamp an important Aboriginal archaeological site where an Aboriginal skull was unearthed in 1925. Further archaeological digs between 1968 and 1972 unearthed 22 more partial skeletons. Radiocarbon dating put the skulls as being buried about 13,000 years ago. In recent years, following Aboriginal community representations, the partial skeletons have been returned to Kow Swamp from various museums and the Australian National University. Look out for Birds Bakery at 45 King George Street opposite Gunbower Island and parks. The Information centre is nearby.
