説明 | Exhibit information:N.S. SavannahThe world's first nuclear-powered merchant ship. Suggested by President Eisenhower in 1955, authorizied by Congress in 1956. Built for the Maritime Administration, United States Department of Commerce, and the Atomic Energy Commission, by the New York Shipbuilding Corporation, Camden, New Jersey. Keel laid by Mrs. Richard M. Nixon on May 22, 1958. Launched by Mrs. Dwight D. Eisenhower, July 21, 1959. To be completed Spring 1960 and operated by States Marine Corporation as agent for the Maritime Administration. Named in honor of the SS Savannah, first steamship to cross the Atlantic.LENGTH - 595 feet 6 inches overall; BEAM - 78 feet.DISPLACEMENT - 21,840 tons (full load).DEADWEIGHT - 9,990 tons capacity.HORSEPOWER - 20,000 shaft (normal).SPEED - 20.25 knots.ENGINE - Steam turbine, single propeller.REACTOR - Built by Babcock & Wilcox. Pressurized water as coolant and moderator, fuel elements of about 4% uranium-235 enrichment. Power 74 megawatts maximum.
