説明 | On October 24, 2024, Oregon State University (OSU) Extension and the Northern Blues Prescribed Fire Council hosted the Fall 2024 Annual Tour at the Oberteuffer Research Forest in Elgin, Ore. to explore cross-boundary burning and prescribed fire on private lands. Attendees included staff from federal, state, and local agencies and non-profits, tribal members and staff, students from local universities and private landowners. John Punches, Associate Professor and Extension Forester for Union, Umatilla, and Wallowa Counties, led the group in prescribed fire training which included checking in on recent spring and fall prescribed burns across the property to compare understory results and observations. The Northern Blues “All Lands” Restoration Partnership group organized the tour to bring partners together to visit a project underway or being planned on the landscape. The Partnership group works together to support cross boundary, cross-jurisdictional ridgetop-to-ridgetop projects in an effort to restore, create and sustain healthy, fire resilient landscapes and communities across the Northern Blue Mountains in Eastern Oregon. Fire-adapted landscapes managed with prescribed burning have been shown to be more resilient to catastrophic wildfires. For thousands of years, fire historically occurred across Oregon's landscape through natural occurrences and the cultural practices of Indigenous peoples. After more than a century of fire suppression, trees are stressed with overcrowding, fire-dependent species have been altered, and flammable fuels are built up and become hazardous to landscapes, life and property. To reduce the risk of severe wildfire, local conservationists turn to prescribed fire. Prescribed fire helps to replicate the natural role fire historically played. Intentional and controlled burns done at the right place and time reduce hazardous fuel build-up, remove invasive or dead forest under-story and promote the growth of new vegetation that provides beneficial habitat for wildlife. Prescribed fire can increase native species, especially fire-dependent ones, and also help maintain historic Tribal practices and resources. Trainings like this one give practitioners the hands-on experience to train with forestry and prescribed fire experts, collaborate with partners and learn how to conduct a controlled burn safely on private lands. The USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service offers technical and financial assistance to private landowners to harness prescribed burning to achieve their conservation objectives. With support from partners at the U.S. Forest Service and Oregon State University, NRCS Oregon staff can help landowners improve the resiliency and health of their pasture, range or forest land. Getting good fire on the ground is the goal. Controlled fire at the right place and the right time can reduce the risk of severe wildfire and help private landowners protect their land, life and property. |
