説明 | Flint (chert) from the Pennsylvanian of Ohio, USA."Flint" is the official gemstone of Ohio. Flint is actually chert (the two terms are synonymous, despite what anyone else might say), a cryptocrystalline, quartzose sedimentary rock. High-quality, colorful, multicolored, and multipatterned flint is moderately common at some Ohio localities. Some famous flint occurrences in eastern Ohio include the Vanport Flint, the Upper Mercer Flint, and the Zaleski Flint. This is knapper's grade "Coshocton Flint", a nickname for the Pennsylvanian-aged Upper Mercer Flint. It is blackish with hints of dark blue and often has small whitish patches or specks. The Upper Mercer Flint is a somewhat persistent horizon of chertified marine fossiliferous limestone called the Upper Mercer Limestone.Stratigraphy: Upper Mercer Flint (= chertified Upper Mercer Limestone), upper Bedford Cyclothem, upper Pottsville Group, Atokan Series, lower Middle PennsylvanianLocality: undisclosed site in Ohio, USA |
