説明 | An intact heavy anti-aircraft battery located at mellon Charles, on the north shore of Loch Ewe in West Scotland. The site was one of many constructed around the loch to protect the fleet of vessels that used the sheltered and expansive bay for shelter. Loch Ewe came to prominence following the sinking of the Royal Oak in Scapa Flow in 1939 and was used as temporary anchorage fo the Home Fleet. Later in the war the Loch was used as a rally point for vessels embarking on the perilous Arctic Convoy routes. Post-war the loch continued, and still does, to provide anchorage and refuelling for NATO vessels and has played part in numerous NATO exercises. The site is recorded as having been fitted with 3.7-inch guns, but evidence in the holdfasts suggests the site may have been fitted 4.5-inch guns. A modified emplacement may have mounted alternative weapons during or post-war. |
