| 説明 | Standing almost directly beneath the western tower of the Bay Bridge's original 1936 suspension span, I've framed this shot to flatten the structure into something closer to graphic abstraction than conventional infrastructure photography. The portrait orientation is a deliberate choice — it forces the eye upward along the tower's stacked X-bracing and cross-girders, reading the steel like a page of industrial typography. Shooting under overcast conditions was equally intentional: the flat, diffuse light eliminates distracting shadow play, letting the tonal range of the steel itself carry the image. Converted to black and white, the scene becomes almost timeless — stripped of color, what remains is pure structural logic.Charles Purcell's engineering aesthetic, deeply indebted to the Art Deco sensibility of the 1930s, shows clearly in the tower's cross-bracing pattern — those intersecting diagonals read as ornament as much as structure. The double-deck roadway truss sweeps diagonally across the lower frame, its Warren truss geometry providing rhythmic counterpoint to the tower's vertical authority. Most people experience this bridge only from inside a car, reading it as background. Positioning myself at water level and pointing upward reclaims it as architecture — a massive, considered artifact of Depression-era ambition and engineering confidence that the windshield view never allows you to fully absorb. |
