説明Built in 1859-1860, this Classical Revival-style water tower and former pumping station were designed by Theodore R. Scowden and constructed to serve as a pumping station for the water system of the city of Louisville. The oldest still-standing ornamental water tower in the world, the tower stands 183 feet (56 meters) tall, towering over the Ohio River upstream of Downtown Louisville. The tower predates the more famous Chicago Water Tower by almost a decade, while the pumping station was inspired by the Fairmount Water Works in Philadelphia, constructed in the 1820s, as well as French architect Claude Nicholas Ledoux's philosophies. The tower was constructed to address fire risk and prevalence of cholera in the city at the time, which made this safe, reliable, and clean source of water a high priority. The tower features a white painted red brick base with a cast iron pipe, in the form of a doric column, above, which features a paneled exterior, a lantern with arched windows above a square capital with festoons, a dome at the top of the tower, a corinthian colonnade at the base of the tower with a cornice featuring dentils and a rooftop balustrade, which features decorative statues. The pumping station, located adjacent to the tower, features a tall central wing with a front-gable roof and porticoes with fluted corinthian columns on the front and rear facades, a red brick exterior clad in white stucco, nine-over-nine double-hung windows, corinthian pilasters, cornices with dentils and modillions at the eaves of the gabled roofs, and decorative pediments over the windows. The tower was heavily damaged by a tornado in 1890, which dislodged the original wooden panels on the exterior of the upper portion of the tower, leading to their replacement with sturdier cast iron. The tower remained in use until 1909, when it was replaced with a reservoir on Crescent Hill, but remained in place as a backup system. The water tower and original pumping station were listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1971, and today, serve as a centerpiece of the Louisville Water Tower Park, with the pumping station housing the Louisville WaterWorks Museum. The tower and pumping station underwent extensive restoration and repair of their exteriors in 2023.
