説明 | Built in 1925, this Renaissance Revival-style building was designed by William B. Betts for the Polka Brothers Vaudeville Circuit, serving the growing Chicago suburb of Des Plaines. The building was renovated under the direction of Pereira and Pereira in 1935 after being acquired by the Balaban and Katz Chain, becoming a movie theater. The building is clad in red brick with tan and green terra cotta, with large bays on the first floor, arched bays on the second floor, a large auditorium and stage house clad in red brick to the rear, and an Art Deco-style marquee. Inside, the building features a Moorish Revival-style lobby and a Spanish Renaissance Revival-style auditorium, with many decorative motifs and decorative trim. The building was renovated after suffering significant damage from a fire in 1982, becoming a two-screen movie theater, which operated until 2003, and operated intermittently until 2010. In 2010-2011, the building was renovated and the interior was restored to a single, large auditorium, and it was reopened as a performing arts center, which operated until 2014, when it once again closed. The theater underwent further renovations in 2019-2021, reopening once again as a live performance, concert, and performing arts theater. |
