説明 | Built in 1914, this small Chicago School-style building was designed by Louis Sullivan for the Purdue State Bank. The building was the smallest of Sullivan’s “Jewel Box” Bank commissions, and is by far the least elaborate, with sparing use of terra cotta, a small footprint on a wedge-shaped piece of land, and the extensive use of patterned brickwork on the exterior in lieu of more expensive terra cotta and tile ornament setting the building apart from other banks designed by Sullivan. The building is a small, one-story flatiron building with a red brick exterior, green glazed terra cotta trim at the window bays, entrance bay, and parapet cap, small terra cotta tiles on the face of the parapet, brick pillars between the window openings, and an entrance bay at the narrow end of the building, which has been converted into an ATM. A small, one-story addition, clad in limestone, was added to the east side of the building in the 1950s, containing the building entrance, banking lobby and drive-through window, leading to the modification of the original structure for offices, and the closure of the original entrance. Today, the building remains in use as a bank, being home to a branch of Chase Bank. The building is significant as the only work of Louis Sullivan, one of the most notable and consequential architects of the 19th Century and 20th Century, in the state of Indiana. However, the building does not have any historical designation at this time. |
