説明 | A closer look at the details on Chatham Naval Memorial. The monument was built in 2 phases - the first, unveiled in 1924, was designed by Sir Robert Lorimer with sculpture by Henry Poole. The second phase, which includes the curving wall and barrel vaulted shelters, unveiled in 1952, was designed by Sir Edward Maufe, with sculpture by William McMillan and Charles Wheeler. I guess they were behind the winged merhorse figures on the end of each shelter. They stand above the word "Polaris" on the left hand shelter, and "Crux" on the right hand. Aside from Polaris perhaps being the north star and Crux being the Southern Cross - both being used in navigation, I'm not sure whether there is other significance to the names. The momument is Grade I listed. |
