説明Built in 2006-2012 and finished in 2019-2021, this Contemporary building was designed by Johnson Fain and Hornbeek Blatt to house the First Americans Museum, a museum that documents and interprets the history of the 38 indigenous tribes that call Oklahoma home. The building is located along the Oklahoma River in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and began construction in 2006, but was halted due to state budget cuts in 2012, before it was completed. The building sat incomplete until 2019, when construction resumed after the museum was transferred to the municipal government of Oklahoma City, and was finally finished in 2021. Around the museum are gardens, lawns, and plazas designed by Hargreaves Jones, a landscape architecture firm. The museum's design takes inspiration from the cultures and customs of various tribes, with the mound being based on ancient earthworks that can be found throughout the Great Plains, Mississippi River Valley, and Ohio River Valley, and a small aperture in the mound allowing the setting sun to pass through on the winter solstice. The atrium is based on the traditional grass houses of the Wichita tribe, whom were one of the tribes in Oklahoma prior to the 19th Century. Additionally, the museum buildings are arc-shaped, and border the larger courtyard that is partially enclosed by the mound, and a smaller entrance courtyard to the east. The mound is accessible by a walking path that rises from the courtyard and runs across the roof of the building to the east of the atrium, before curving up to a vantage point at the highest part of the mound, which provides panoramic views of Oklahoma City, the museum, and the Oklahoma River. Inside, a series of well-crafted and carefully curated exhibits tell the stories of the 38 tribes that call Oklahoma home, educating visitors about their unique cultures, diversity, history, contributions to American culture and society, and their resilience. The museum is managed by the Indian Cultural Center Foundation, comprised of members of the 38 tribes that call Oklahoma home, most of whom were deported to the state by the United States Government from their home territories in the 19th Century. The First Americans Museum is a mix of contemporary architecture that takes inspiration from indigenous traditions, and tells the stories of the indigenous tribes of Oklahoma from their own perspective.
