説明 | France has asserted that it "owns" part of Antarctica, an idea rejected by many countries. They call this area the "French Southern & Antarctic Territory" (it actually literally translates as "French Southern & Antarctic Lands"). This 1.00 franc postage stamp (= Scott Catalogue # 235) was issued on 2 January 1998. It depicts "rock crystal", which is a rockhound term for quartz, the most common mineral in Earth's crust. Quartz is SiO2 - basically pure silica. Quartz has a non-metallic luster, can be any color (the common colors are clear, white, and gray), a white streak, forms hexagonal crystals, and has no cleavage. It breaks along conchoidal fractures (= smooth, curved fracture surfaces) and has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs Hardness Scale - it is the hardest common mineral.See: www.flickr.com/photos/jsjgeology/albums/72157660268010872/ |
