| 説明 | Coorabie. These marginal lands well north of Goyder’s Line were taken up for grain growing and wool and the settlers soon formed tight knit communities. Being 156 kms west of Ceduna Coorabie was very isolated. Coorabie is an Aboriginal word meaning “magpie water”. In 1898 Coorabie School opened in a private house before a stone building was erected by the community in 1901. The Education Department paid half the cost which was £46 for them and the same for the community. The school was used as a community hall until the stone public hall opened on 11th February 1911. The foundation stone of the hall was laid in 1910. Coorabie School operated until 1994 when it was amalgamated with Penong School. One school room was removed to Penong to become the administration building but the others remained on the site. The school had closed earlier in 1951 but reopened in 1957. Over its lifetime Coorabie School had over 550 students and 68 teachers. The Coorabie community fielded football and cricket teams, tennis teams and basketball teams playing all over Eyre Peninsula. In the 1920s and 1930s they held regular horse racing events. But even by 1946 the “town” contained only six houses. A branch of the Agricultural Bureau opened in 1912, a War Memorial obelisk was erected in 1950 showing the names of 12 men who served in World War One and three who served in World War Two. Coorabie had its first official Post Office opened in 1923 and a telephone exchange that only became automatic in 1984. Today there is no Post Office. Coorabie has a small cemetery. In more recent decades properties have been amalgamated, farming methods have changed and rural depopulation has led to the disappearance of the town. One property which regularly produced canola and barley crops is Coorabie Farm which operates on 50,000 acres. It is a large pastoral property too. A recent purchaser of farm lands at Coorabie is Dr David Cooper of Jamestown who has a PhD in wheat breeds with high salt tolerance. So despite the marginality and climate, cropping still occurs in good seasons at Coorabie. It is surprising that a district 150 kms west and north of Ceduna and so far north of Goyder’s Line still produces crops. Coorabie is the same latitude as areas north of Wilpena Pound! |
