説明 | 1961 Bristol FS 6G chassis with Eastern Coach Works convertible body (could be switched from closed top in the winter to open in the summer – one of four built) and Gardner 6LXB 8.4 litre 6-cylinder diesel engine (re-engined in 1995 from a Gardner 6LW), hence 6G in the designation, at the Bristol Bus Show, Brislington, 28 July 2024. Registration No.452XVE (originally 866NHT), Bristol Omnibus Co. Fleet No.L8576. She served on the Western-super-Mare seafront service in the summer (as an open top) and town services in the winter (as a closed top) 1961-81, then she was sold to several companies for open top tours until final withdrawal by East Yorkshire Motor Services in 2019 after which it was preserved. The Lodekka (Low Double Decker) was a low-bridge double decker and the first production bus to have no step up from the entrance through the lower passenger deck. It was a very innovative design in that previous low-bridge designs (such as the low-bridge variety of the Bristol K series) had a very inconvenient upper deck seating layout – a deep passenger gangway on one side at the end of four seater benches and restricted headroom. The Lodekka’s very low design avoided this by having twin benches each side of the passenger gangway. The Lodekka was highly successful and was in production 1949-68, over 5,200 being built as the standard double-decker for the state-owned bus sector in the UK. In addition, Dennis built them under license as the Dennis Loline 1958-66 for the private operators. All Lodekkas were bodied by Bristol Commercial Vehicles associate company, Eastern Coach Works although a variety of diesel engines were fitted: Gardner 5LW 5-cylinder (Bristol code 5G), Gardner 6LW or 6LX 6-cylinder (both code 6G), Leyland O.600 or O.680 6-cylinder (code 6L) and Bristol AVW or BVW 6-cylinder engine (code 6B). The bus chassis/body codes were as follows:LDX – Lo Dekka Experimental, 26’x7’6”, traditional half cab with open rear entrance platform but no step into the lower deck passenger compartment which comprised a shallow gangway between twin bench seats on slightly raised platforms while the upper deck also managed to arrange twin benches each side of a gangway instead of the then conventional 4-seater benches with a deep sunken gangway to one side; two prototypes were built which performed well ‘straight out of the box’ – a tribute to Bristol’s reputation for well-designed vehicles of the highest quality.LD – Lo Dekka, 27’x8’, production vehicles slightly longer and wider than the LDX prototypes. The main early production type. Later LD’s had doors on the rear entrance.LDL – Lo Dekka Long, 30’x8’, a longer version of the LD when revised Construction & Use Regulations in 1956 allowed 30’ buses. 5 were built in the standard lower deck configuration but no more as the 6th LDL was a redesign with a fully flat floor on the lower deck, doing away with the shallow gangway between benches. Production of this followed as the recoded FL, for which the 6th LDL was effectively the prototype.LDS – Lo Dekka Short, 27’x8’, a shorter version of the 6th LDL i.e. with flat floor, essentially being pre-production FS’s before the change in chassis codes. With the development of the totally flat floor on the lower deck, Bristol decided to change the Lodekka’s codes:FS – Flat floor Short, 27’x8’, production version of the LDS.FL – Flat floor Long, 30’x8’, production version of 6th LDL. FSF – Flat floor, Short, Forward entrance, 27’x8’, an improved FS with a redesigned body with a front entrance with doors and front stairs.FSL – Flat floor, Long, Forward entrance, 30’x8’, an improved FL with a redesigned body with a front entrance with doors and front stairs. With the introduction of One Man Operation (OMO), the days of the Lodekka were numbered as they couldn’t be adapted to such operation as the new rear-engined buses could. |
