It has been classified as a critically endangered species by the Ministry of Environment. This fully forest-dwelling species lives in forest floors and along streambeds, and it is rarely seen outside of forested areas. In Katoku, where the habitat conditions are well-suited, the Hanasaki frog is commonly observed— fully contributing to nature's food chain. In addition to the accelerating destruction of nature, the frog is also being threatened by non-native species that humans have brought to the island. In the video, the Hanasaki frog is being preyed upon by the Japanese Keelback Snake, which was originally only inhibited in mainland Japan. Climate change has been significantly influencing typhoons, making them more intense and destructive. In 2014, a mega-sized typhoon number 18 struck the coast of Amami Island in southern Japan. This CC-BY-licensed footage of climate change was published with support from Internews' Earth Journalism Network and The Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). |
